A RELIABLE COMMUTE

across the American Legion Bridge to
the I-270 west spur, and up I-270 to I-370

IS ON THE HORIZON.

A historic effort to reduce congestion for millions of drivers.

THE PROBLEM:

We all know the National Capital Region has some of the worst, and at times unpredictable traffic in the country.

Traveling between Montgomery County, Maryland and Virginia without checking travel times on a navigation app is a gamble.

The predictably unpredictable commute has become the norm.

Being inconvenienced is a given.

After decades of studies, the State of Maryland has found its solution. The New American Legion Bridge I-270 Traffic Relief Plan is focused on replacing the aging American Legion Bridge and relieving traffic congestion at one of the nation’s biggest bottlenecks. It will provide new options and opportunities for transit riders, carpoolers, cyclists and pedestrians across the interstates, both in Maryland and in Virginia.

THE SOLUTION:

Transit, High Occupancy Toll Lanes, HOV 3+, Bike and Pedestrian Solutions

NEW HIGH OCCUPANCY TOLL (HOT) LANES

Phase 1 South of the New American Legion Bridge
I-270 Traffic Relief Plan will include two new High Occupancy Toll (HOT) managed lanes in each direction from south of the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Fairfax County, VA, to west of MD 187 (Old Georgetown Road) in Montgomery County, MD.

On I-270, the project will convert the existing high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane in each direction to a HOT managed lane, and add one new HOT managed lane in each direction on I-270 from I-495 to north of I-370, and on the I-270 east and west spurs.

For the HOT lanes , high occupancy vehicles with three or more passengers or HOV 3+ could use the lanes for free. Vehicles with a minimum of three occupants – including carpools and vanpools – transit buses and motorcycles could use these lanes without paying a toll.

BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN TRAIL ON THE NEW AMERICAN LEGION BRIDGE

A new American Legion Bridge will be built. The new bridge will include a bike and pedestrian trail connecting trails in Maryland and Virginia. Those who enjoy biking or walking will now have a new trail across the Potomac River.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SOLUTIONS

This project is about increased mobility – moving people safer, faster and more reliably. It will allow for new transit connections between Maryland and Virginia – which currently do not exist due to highly congested and unreliable general purpose lanes.

What used to be unpredictable traffic headaches will now be reliable solutions.

The State of Maryland has chosen a P3 partner who is experienced and dedicated to delivering transit options, opportunities, and reliability to your commute.

The AM Partners consortium is led by Transurban and Macquarie Capital, whose collective experience spans more than 90 successful P3 projects globally, including Virginia’s 495, 95 and 395 Express Lanes network – the largest urban P3 toll network in the U.S. with all segments delivered on time and on budget. The consortium seeks to extend the benefits of Virginia’s neighboring Express Lanes network that has saved more than seven million drivers a total of 17 million hours of time, while generating an estimated $7 billion in economic impact and 46,000 jobs in the Greater Washington Area through its development and construction since 2012. AM Partners was selected in February 2021 as Maryland’s preferred Developer for the American Legion Bridge I-270 to I-70 Traffic Relief Plan.
